Boston Museum of Science

Boston Museum of Science Posted by Hello

Today we took a family outing to the Boston Museum of Science. We had a blast even though we kind of got ripped off hehe. See we went there thinking the exhibits were open to 7:30... but they were only open until 5. So the tickets we bought, 3 for exhibits +2 attractions should have been perfect. Instead we rushed around alot. We first saw the 3D bugs film. About 20 minutes and primarily about a praying mantis and a catipillar. The 3D effects were excellent. Next we went to a few physics labs to teach ryan about leverage and other cool experiments. Then we headed off to an electricity show featuring a Van de Graaff Generator and 4 Tesla coils. (Two were quite small and two were huge!) While loud and a bit scary as random lightning bolts can be, we had a blast. Then we went to the plantarium. And hour long show on Supernovae. It was quite informative and I actually learned a thing or two. I also stopped by to see an aztec calendar stone + pendulum. I have to say the aztecs rocked! Then we headed off to see more exhibits... Of course the exhibits were closed so we headed to gift shop where we spent far too much money then we should have. Overall it was a blast. I highly reccomend it for a one day adventure to just about anyone. More pictures and updates to come.

Oh the pictures above... The First is Ryan and I on top of a slab of Granite. Ryan wanted everyone to know he was 6! This picture was taken out in front where there are various rocks from around the world.

The next picture is quite dark and shows the Van de Graaff Generator and the wired cage that rings it. This picture was taken just before the electricity show began. We would have take more pictures during the show but it was mostly dark and we had to rush out before the end to get to the planetarium.

The next picture was taken in the 3D Movie theatre where they ran a flick called BUGS! In it we follow the life of a newborn catepillar and a praying mantis. There is a vicious slaughter and murder of the catepillar by the mantis but not until after it managed to become a butterfly and lay little butterfly eggs.

The next picture of Ryan and I was taken while we were examining some bits of pollen. That machine there enlarged everything for us to see. It was one of the brief explorations of the exhibits that we could manage.

The next picture is of Robyn. I kind of caught her off guard hehe.

The we have another shot of the Van de Graaff Generator taken with my little spy cam. I lightned the picture a bit. The history of the machine is quite interesting. It began at MIT as a machine to split atoms. Then the spheres were seperated and each charged with 2.5 million volts of opposing charges. Between them was the target where the two bolts met for combined 5 million volts! Later the spheres were merged and dropped in the MOS parking lot where they built the exhibit around it. The right column has a conveyor which moves the charges up to the spheres, the left column is actually empty.

The last picture is of petrified wood. I touched it... its really a rock hehe.
